The San Francisco 49ers seem to have found an unexpected solution to their defensive line problems. After losing their entire starting defensive front, the team appeared likely to pursue pass rushers before the trade deadline.

However, the young players stepping into those roles have changed the situation, potentially allowing general manager John Lynch to focus on another area of need.

49ers beat writer David Lombardi discussed the turnaround on X, formerly Twitter. He pointed out that the defensive line’s recent production has changed the team's trade priorities. Rather than making the pass rush the primary target, San Francisco could now look to add help at wide receiver.

“Wild development considering the 49ers are down their entire starting D-line: It’s probably not even a top trade priority anymore. That’s how much the young guys are surging,” Lombardi wrote. “WR emerging as the top trade priority. But this is a narrative-shattering surge from the D-line.”

The 49ers' defensive front delivered a dominant performance against Sam Darnold over the weekend, generating a pressure rate in the 97th percentile. Seven different players recorded multiple pressures, with Keion White and Gracen Halton leading the way. Halton also recorded a strip-and-score touchdown.

White's versatility has added to his value. He has helped San Francisco maintain pressure on opposing quarterbacks despite missing its usual starters.

With Nick Bosa nearing a comeback, the 49ers may soon have another established pass rusher joining a defensive front that has already started producing at a high level. It could all help San Francisco swap its trade resources for a wide receiver.
