The San Francisco 49ers have gotten off to an excellent start to the 2026 season, currently sitting at 2-0 following a recent blowout home win over the Miami Dolphins. Quarterback Brock Purdy has been playing at an MVP level so far, and the team looks poised to once again be among the NFC's elite this year.
On Wednesday, the team made a big move to give their roster another boost as the season continues.
“The 49ers are signing veteran DT Naquan Jones off the Vikings practice squad, per source,” reported NFL insider Tom Pelissero of The Ringer and Netflix on X, formerly Twitter.
Jones has bounced around the league so far during his NFL tenure, having gone undrafted back in 2021. He played eight games for the Los Angeles Chargers during the 2025 season prior to being released, and has since been signed by the Houston Texans and Vikings prior to his arrival in San Francisco.
It's possible that this move could simply be a preemptive measure by the 49ers in case any of their injury concerns flare up once again, as has been the case several times over the years during this current era.
In fact, many point to injuries as the main reason the 49ers haven't been able to hoist a Lombardi Trophy during their current run of postseason pushes, although they did come painfully close to doing so in 2023.
Still, fans are unlikely to complain about the prospect of adding another competent defensive lineman to the mix as the season wears on.
In any case, the 49ers are next set to hit the field on Sunday at home against the Arizona Cardinals at 4:05 pm ET.
