Anthony Joshua’s driver charged over fatal Nigeria car crash that killed two team members

Anthony Joshua’s driver has been charged for his involvement in a fatal car crash that killed two of the boxer’s team members.

Joshua’s personal trainer, Latif Ayodele, and sport and exercise rehabilitation coach, Sina Ghami, died on Monday after the car they were travelling in collided with a stationary truck, which was parked on the hard shoulder of a major road in Ogun State, Nigeria.

Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, was charged at the Sagamu Magistrate Court on Friday.

He is accused of causing death by dangerous driving, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care, and driving without a valid driver’s license.

The case has been adjourned until January 20.

Police spokesman Oluseyi Babaseyi told AFP: “The defendant was granted bail in the sum of five million naira (£2,579) with two sureties.

“He was remanded pending when he meets his bail condition.”

The chauffeur has been held in police custody since he was discharged from hospital on Thursday with minor injuries.

Babatunde Akinbiyi, a spokesperson for Ogun State’s Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, suggested that Kayode had been speeding at the time of the crash.

He said: “From the preliminary investigation that was conducted, definitely there was overspeeding on the part of the SUV Anthony Joshua was travelling in.

“In the course of that, the front tyre on the passenger side burst.

“That led to loss of control before the vehicle now swerved and rammed into the stationary lorry that was parked. There was excessive speed.”

Nigerian police have also launched a manhunt for the driver of the truck, which they determined had been parked illegally on the side of the highway.

“He was parked on the side of the highway, which is illegal, he had not broken down, and he was not with the vehicle when the accident happened,” a Nigerian police officer said.
