38-year-old Mizoram cricketer dies after collapsing on field during local match

Former Mizoram Ranji Trophy cricketer K Lalremruata tragically passed away after collapsing on the field during a local cricket match on Thursday. The 38-year-old complained of chest pain while returning to the pavilion after batting and could not be revived despite immediate efforts.

The incident occurred during the Khaled Memorial Second Division Screening Tournament, a local competition being held at the Suaka cricket ground near Sairang railway station, close to Aizawl. Lalremruata was representing Venghnuai Raiders Cricket Club (VRCC) in a match against Chawnpui ILMOV Cricket Club.

According to officials and eyewitnesses, the cricketer experienced discomfort after completing his batting and complained of chest pain while walking back to the pavilion. Moments later, he collapsed on the ground and lost consciousness. Despite getting medical assistance, he could not be revived and was later declared dead. 

The Cricket Association of Mizoram (CAM) confirmed Lalremruata’s death and stated that he suffered a stroke during the match. Calling it a loss for cricket in the state, the association expressed condolences to the cricketer’s family and loved ones.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family. May God comfort them as they navigate this great loss,” the association stated.

Lalremruata had represented the state twice in the Ranji Trophy and featured seven times in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He was also actively involved in local cricket and had played for several clubs over the years, contributing to the development of the sport at the grassroots level.

Mizoram’s Sports and Youth Services Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar also expressed deep sadness over the cricketer’s death. In his condolence message, Hmar stated that Lalremruata experienced breathing difficulties during the match before collapsing.

“I am deeply saddened by the tragic passing of K Lalremruata, who collapsed during a cricket match today. My heartfelt condolences go out to his bereaved family, friends, and members of the sporting fraternity during this difficult time,” Hmar said.
